Challenge and Ambition

Kvadrat Softcells are developing and producing high-performance acoustic panels characterized by aesthetic excellence and exceptional versatility. In their customizable solutions, they are dedicated to pushing the aesthetic and technological boundaries of acoustic solutions.

Traditionally extensive testing according to ISO 354 and 11654 is necessary to acoustically characterize the panels and determine sound absorption class. Every permutation requires testing. This project was initiated to investigate the possibilities of reducing the time and cost involved in testing sound absorption testing. We set out to develop a simulation app that allows quick and easy ‘what-if’ studies on different textiles, buildups, and mountings without testing.


We conducted an intensive sensitivity study to evaluate which parameters were most significant and which can be set as default values. The final model was verified against literature and the extensive set of customer tests for maximum generality. Working with the important usage of the resulting tool we focused on ensuring the best balance between accuracy and robustness/computational speed.

Today Soft Cells is running the app and their feedback is very positive. With the App and the underlying model, they can continue development as they come across scenarios that require augmentation of the model. This digital model and customized tool prove to be a powerful combination of validated knowledge which also generates valuable insights when being used.
