Velux solar heat exposure simulation

Challenge and Ambition

The solar heat exposure test setup is designed to expose windows to high thermal loads. The test includes lamps acting as an artificial sun to test the effect of sunlight on the temperatures on window components, ranging from frame to glazing unit materials. Temperature level is crucial for material choice and durability. The test requires complete prototypes, which at times can be a limiting factor during the development process. Thermocouples are difficult to place within the window frame, due to the complexity of the geometry as well as they might affect the measurement itself.

Solution

Resolvent developed a model with ray-tracing coupled to heat-transfer which can predict temperature within the window frame support the material choice as well as giving insight into test results.
